Attack on synagogue in Tunisia: 3 dead, 9 wounded

As a result of an armed attack on the El Griba synagogue, three people were killed in Tunisia in Tunisia, nine more were wounded. According to the Tunisian Ministry of Internal Affairs, an attack was made by a security officer.

The attacker killed a colleague to take ammunition, on the way to the synagogue the police tried to stop him, a shootout arose, the department said.

Two dead – visitors to the synagogue, one police officer, specified in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The criminal is liquidated in a shootout with the police. All wounded, including five security forces, are hospitalized.

El Griba synagogue, due to the ongoing religious holidays, visit a thousand Jews. On the island of Jerga about 500 square kilometers there are 366 mosques, as well as the oldest synagogue in Africa.

Muslims and Jews call Jerba in different ways: “Island of mosques”, “Sinagog Island” or “El Griba Island”. Traces of different civilizations have been preserved on the island, including Greek and Roman.

The population of the island is 160 thousand people. Most are Muslims. About 1,200 Tunisian Jews also live here.
