Baku: trial of killer of LGBT activist began

A preliminary hearing in the criminal case of Amrullah Gulaliyev, accused of the murder of 24-year-old Avaz Shikhmamedov (Avaz Hafizley), was held in the Baku Court of Court of Criminal Court.

As the Haqqin.az correspondent reports, the accused Gulaliev joined the court hearing online from the Baku investigative insulator, where he was detained.

representatives of the media and LGBT activists who came to visit the process, were not allowed into the courtroom. However, employees of the British Embassy in Azerbaijan got the opportunity to attend the hearings.

At the same time, the brother of the deceased was recognized as the lawful heir to the victim. However, he and other close relatives did not appear in court.

The court will continue on July 4.

Note that Shikhmamedov was stabbed on February 22 of this year in the courtyard of his house in the village of Balakhana of the city of Baku. The accused of committing a crime Amrula Gulaliev said that the incident occurred against the backdrop of disagreements. Gulaliev was charged under article 120.1 (intentional murder) of the Criminal Code. This article provides for a punishment from 9 to 14 years in prison.

Shikhmamedov, who collaborated with the “13th channel” and a number of other Internet telekanals, is also known as a LGBT activist and took part in protests against violations of the rights of sexual minorities.
