Birth rate in France has fallen to lowest level over past 80 years

The birth rate in France is at the lowest level over the past 80 years.

The National Institute for Statistics and Economic Research of France (INSEE) said that the birth rate in the country in 2022 and the first half of 2023 fell to the lowest level from the end of the Second World War.

According to Insee, in 2022 726 thousand children were born in the country, which is 2.2% less than in 2021, and 13% less than in 2010.

compared with 2010, when the highest birth rate in recent years has been recorded, last year the birth rate among women aged 25-29 years decreased by 3%, among women aged 30-34 years-by 4%, by 4%, And among women over 40 years old – grew by 3%.

The data obtained indicate that the healthcare crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemia contributed to a decrease in indicators in 2021.

In addition to reducing the birth rate, the average age of women in labor and the level of illegitimate birth changed.

The average age of the mother at the birth of the first child increased from 30.2 years in 2012 to 31.2 years in 2022, and the share of illegitimate births over the same years increased from 57% to 65%.
