Disaster in Europe: drought kills trade

Due to the historical drought in Europe, the shipping rivers Danube and Rhine dry out. Trade companies can lose more than $ 80 billion, writes Bloomberg.

Rhine River is considered a support for the economy of Holland, Switzerland and Germany. Due to the drought, she dried up so much that shipping became almost impossible. The transportation of a huge amount of diesel fuel and coal is blocked.

Together with the Rhine, the Danube, crossing Central Europe. Because of this, the transportation of grain and other goods is greatly complicated.

The blow was received not only by trade, but also by the sphere of energy. The waters of the French rivers Rona and Garron became too warm, so they cannot be used to cool nuclear reactors. In Italy, due to the low level of the RO RO, people cannot water rice fields and grow mollusks.

In Europe, more than 1 tons of cargo for each resident of the EU annually transport about $ 80 billion to the region’s economy.

“The throughput of internal navigation will be very limited until there will be a lot of rains in this area. You also receive damage caused in Germany with high prices for electricity. We are talking about billions,” said Albert ABN Amro Bank NV Yana Svarta .

The situation was evaluated by the hydrologist Volue Sileier Ericksen Holmen. In her opinion, the conditions as a result of which the rivers of Europe have dried up are part of a long -term trend, and not a few bad months. Right now the soil is so dry that most of the rain will be absorbed. And only when the earth is saturated, the water will begin to fill the rivers.

European authorities are preparing for the fact that the situation with the rivers will remain for a long time. Officials are actively developing support measures for trade, energy and agricultural companies.
