Flooding in Libya influenced psyche of children

Some children affected by flooding in Libya lost their ability to speak, and some of them even tried to commit suicide.

Storm “Daniel”, which covered the central Mediterranean, caused floods on September 10 in the cities of Benghazi, Bayda, Merk, Sus and Dern in the east of Libya.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 4 thousand people died, more than 9 thousand were missing.

according to the UN estimates, among 43 thousand people moved as a result of floods in Libya, there are at least 17 thousand children.

According to Unicef, about 300,000 children were injured in floods.

Children witnessed terrifying scenes

Children from turna, who have lost their families, houses, schools, friends and even the city in which they live as a result of flooding, experience difficult days.

Libyan psychologist Shakhin Az-Zayani told the Anadola correspondent that the injuries from this disaster, who left the incredible traces in the memory of children, will remain for many years.

According to Zeani, he met and talked with many children in the city.

“Imagine that the child has lost his family, relatives, a house, a school and friends in an instant. Imagine that another child suddenly wakes up at night from screams coming from streets, overlows and houses, and discovers that his house is flooded There are children who are depressed and are speechless from the pain experienced. The flood hit the city in the evening, and the houses were washed off with the bodies of the dead until the water retreated in the morning. For surviving children, help came too late, ”he said.

According to him, the flood lasted more than 15 hours. “During this time, some children were dragged under the wreckage of houses, and some remained with the corpses of dead relatives,” he said.

There are children trying to commit suicide

Zeani emphasized that such a disaster is even hard for adults. “Two children who lost their parents during the flood in Benghazi have repeatedly made suicide,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

The Libyan psychologist also noted that this had a negative impact on the psychology of children who had to leave their homes.

“Imagine a child who suddenly leaves his house, school, friends and falls into a completely different environment, unsafe and troubled. These are very negative situations,” he continued.
