Georgian Constitutional Court began consideration of impeachment of president

The Constitutional Court of Georgia began consideration of the submission of the impeachment of President Salome Zurabishvili, the initiator of which was the ruling party “Georgian Dream”, according to the court’s website.

September 12 submitted 80 deputies, it was transferred to the Plenum, which will discuss it within a month, after which it will present the conclusion to the parliament.

The court must establish whether the president has violated the Constitution by going to the EU without the permission of the government.

The reason for starting the impeachment procedure was Zurabishvili’s foreign trip without the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers. According to Art. 52 of the Constitution of the country, the President exercises representative powers in external relations, is negotiating with foreign states and international organizations with the consent of the Cabinet of Ministers. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated that the head of state “defiantly violated” the basic law.
