Madagascar on verge of hunger

Hundreds of thousands of people in Madagascar are faced with a threat of hunger, with 80% of them in some areas go to desperate measures to survive.

UN World Food Program (WFP) declares that people eat locust, raw fruit red cactus or wild leaves to avoid hunger.

“We were witnesses witnessing scenes with children suffering from severe malnutrition, and starving families,” said the Senior Operating Director of WFP Amer Dauda. “The scale of the disaster is incredible. If we do not stop this crisis, if we do not deliver food to people in the south of Madagascar, families will be starved, and people will die.”

WFP seeks resources to feed the affected population, and declares that the situation is worsening: the production of food this year is expected to be less than 40% of the normal average in the last five years.
