Moldova Foreign Minister: Chisinau does not plan to consider issue of joining NATO

Moldova currently does not plan to consider the issue of joining NATO, since the population does not support such an idea. This was stated by the Foreign Ministry of Moldova Mikhai Popshoy, the Moldovan State Media reports.

“There can be no talk of some membership in NATO at the moment, because there is no sufficient support in society,” said the head of the diploma.

According to the diplomat, in the minds of most residents of Moldova, NATO is perceived as a “horror story”, and it is necessary to organize public discussions on this topic.

“You need to have a free public discussion about all the” pros “and” against “and in such a democratic process to make a decision. But this will be a longer prospect. At the moment, we are talking about the entry or some more close cooperation, in addition that we still had no time before, ”Pepshoy emphasized.

The diplomat specified that the neutral status of Moldova implies the inability to be part of the military blocs.

At the same time, Pepshoy pointed out that Moldova has a sovereign foreign policy and could cooperate at the political level, including in the field of security.

The Foreign Minister of Moldova emphasized that the country clearly seeks to join the European Union.

“There are several neutral countries in the European Union, one is not contrary to the other. Therefore, we definitely strive for the EU, and there is already serious progress in regarding our European prospects,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova.

According to the Moldova Constitution, the country has neutral status, but since 1994 the republic has been cooperating with the North Atlantic Alliance as part of an individual partnership plan.
