Moldova refused to give Belarus a Ukrainian deputy

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Moldova refused to extradite to Belarus the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Yevgeny Yakovenko, who was detained on the Moldavian border on June 5. This is reported by Newsmaker.

“The reasons for the refusal of extradition are due to the status of this person as a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, who won the elections in 2019 in the Donetsk region, in the context of the geopolitical situation in the region,” the prosecutor’s office noted.

The Moldavian prosecutor’s office suspects that in the event of Yakovenko’s extradition to Belarus, the process against him will not be fair. In addition, the Moldovan prosecutor’s office ordered the release of the Ukrainian deputy.

On June 5, the Border Police of Moldova detained Yakovenko at the request of Belarus. The Border Service of the Moldovan noted that the Ukrainian deputy was introduced to Belarus to the Interpol search base. They added that Yakovenko is accused of bribery and corruption. Since that time, the Ukrainian deputy has been in jail.
