Nigeria: 161 Million People Faced Problem Of Lack Of Food Security

Almost 161 million citizens of Nigeria do not have guaranteed access to food. The problem of food security in the country has reached a critical level.

This was announced by the director of the Department of Food Safety and the Nutrition of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety of Nigeria Alhaji Nuhu Kilishi at a consulting meeting in Abuj, dedicated to the development of a preparation plan for the food and food security crisis (FNSCPP).

According to the director of the Department of Food Safety and Nutrition Alhaji Nuhu Kilishi, only 20% of the country’s population have stable access to food. The level of food instability has increased from 35% in 2014 to 74% in recent years.

“People are not sure whether they will have the next meal. This is an alarming signal,” Kilishi said. He emphasized that the situation exacerbates the growth of violence, armed attacks, abductions of people and economic difficulties that negatively affect agricultural production.

To combat the crisis, the government developed measures within the framework of the Anrin project supported by the World Bank (“Acceleration of Improvement of Nigeria”). The plan provides for the expansion of access to sustainable and high -quality power services for vulnerable groups of the population.

In addition, in 774 regions of the country, a program for the distribution of seeds and agricultural resources will be launched to create home gardens.
