Participation of women in political life of country is growing in Turkey

The number of women in the Turkish parliament of the 28th convocation will become a record in the history of the republic. Such data leads to “Anadola”.

According to preliminary results of the elections on May 14 in Turkey, 121 out of 600 candidates who went to the highest legislative body of the new convocation are women.

thereby, the level of representation of women in the Turkish parliament increased to 20.1 percent, while in the parliament of the previous convocation this indicator was 17.1 percent.

The largest number of women deputies entered the parliament from the party of the green left. The following are the party of justice and development (AK PARTI), the Republican People’s Party (ChP), the İyi̇ Party and the Party of the Nationalist Movement (MHP).

So, from the party of justice and development in the new composition of the parliament, 50 women will sit, from the ChP and the party of the green left – 30 each, the “İyi̇” parties – 6, the party of the nationalist movement – 4, the Turkish Workers’ Party – one.

50 out of 267 new deputies in the fraction of the party of justice and development will be women. Thus, the proportion of female deputies from the ruling party increased to 18.7 percent, while in the parliament of the 27th convocation it was 17.9 percent.

Of the 61 deputy from the Party of Green Lefts, 30 women are represented in parliament. The level of representatives of women from the Green Left Party is 49 percent, which is the highest indicator compared to other parties.

Of the 169 deputies from the Republican People’s Party, 30 women or 17 percent are represented in the parliament of the new convocation. Whereas women in the parliament of the 27th convocation accounted for 12.2 percent.

At the same time, the level of representation of women from the party of the nationalist movement decreased from 10 percent to 8 percent. Only four women out of 50 deputies from this political force are presented in the new composition of the parliament.

The level of representatives of women from the İyi̇ party increased from 6.9 percent to 13.7 percent. The new composition of the parliament presents six women from 44 deputies.

In the parliament of the 28th convocation, women-deputies from 31 out of 81 provinces will not be represented.

The share of women deputies in the Turkish parliament began to grow in 2007.

So, the level of women’s representative office in 550 – local parliament in 2007 amounted to 9.1 percent, in 2011 – 14.3 percent, in 2015 (June 7) – 17.6 percent, in 2015 (November 1, November 1 ) – 14.7 percent, and in the parliament of the 27th convocation, where the number of deputy mandates increased to 600, 17.1 percent.
