Poland began temporary checks on the border with Lithuania and announced similar measures on the border with Germany. This was reported by the Lithuanian agency LRT. According to Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the goal is to restrain the uncontrolled flows of illegal migrants.
“Temporary restoration of control on the Polish -German border is necessary to limit and minimize uncontrolled migration in both directions,” said Tusk at a government meeting, adding that similar control will be carried out in the Lithuanian direction.
He admitted that measures would affect the freedom of movement, but emphasized that the authorities have no alternatives.
Control at 13 points
According to LRT, checks on the Lithuanian border are carried out at 13 points, including friters, Budzisco, Takshishki, Gjybin, Sudavsk, Cravyan, Seleshup, thrombus, burgushka, stuffy man, podges and birch trees.
On the Lithuanian side, points are located on the territory of the Lazdi, Vilkavishk districts and self -government of the Calvaria.
According to the head of the Border Service of Lithuania Antanas Montvidas, the Lithuanian departments are ready to quickly respond in case of the formation of queues.
“We will regulate flows together with the police and the public security service in order to minimize the inconvenience for citizens,” he said.
Criticism from Vilnius
President of Lithuania Gitanas Naoussed to criticize, calling them temporary surrender to the problem.
“It is obvious that the root of the problem is in the inability to effectively protect the external borders of the EU. But we must strive for European decisions and abandon steps that do not correspond to the spirit of the European Union,” he stressed.
The Foreign Minister of Lithuania Kicentutis Budris also stated that such measures should be based on facts, and not on political motives.
In addition, Lithuania reported the adoption of additional measures on the border with Latvia to suppress the “secondary migration”.
