Scientists predict an increase in temperature in Mediterranean basin 1.5 degrees more

Turkish scientists predict that the temperature in the Mediterranean region on average rises 1.5 degrees more than in other regions

In an interview with Anadolu, the head of the Department of Physics at the University of Ishyk TugBA Oztyurk said, according to the results of the research, with an increase in temperature in the world by 1 degree, in the Mediterranean region, growth will be 1.5 degrees.

Studies in the field of climate change in Europe, the Mediterranean basin and Turkey are important from the point of view of adaptation to climate change and the timely detection of risks.

One of the research in this area is a project that studies using modeling the scale of possible changes in weather conditions and natural disasters in Europe.

Oztyurk said that the project is implemented with the support of the Council on Scientific and Technical Research by Turkey (Tübi̇tak). According to her, having studied data on climate changes and natural phenomena over the past 120 years, scientists working on the project predict possible climate changes in the future.

“The results of the study show that the temperature in the Mediterranean region on average rises 1.5 degrees more than in other regions. For example, if the temperature rises 1 degree in the world, then in the Mediterranean Sea basin by 1.5 degrees” – she said.

She emphasized that as part of the project, scientists studied the frequency and power of extreme weather phenomena in the Mediterranean basin and Europe.

The framework of research also studied the possible influence of climatic changes on various sectors of the economy. In particular, changes are influenced by agriculture, food security and even healthcare.
