Senate Nigeria opposed sending of troops to Niger

Nigeria Senate did not satisfy the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinube to send troops to Niger, where a military coup was the other day.

Senate Chairman Nigeria Godsville Akpabio made a statement that states that the Senate examined the president’s appeal to support military intervention in Niger, and considered this step unacceptable.

He stated that the Senate did not accept the proposal to send troops to Niger. According to the chairman, the political situation in Niger should be resolved in political means, and not by military intervention.

On July 30, Ecowas leaders gave Nigersa junta 15 days to restore the constitutional order in the country. In the event that the requirements are not fulfilled, countries of the organization promise to start military intervention in Niger.

The coup in Niger began on July 27. A group of military, led by Colonel-General Abdurahman Tchiana, suspended President Bazum from the authorities. The leaders of the economic community of Western Africa (ECOWAS) immediately imposed sanctions against Niger, suspending all economic and financial operations with this country.
