Sweden: thank Gorbachev for collapse of USSR

Decisions taken by Mikhail Gorbachev became the main factor that eventually led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is reported by the Swedish edition of SVENSKA DAGBLADET, RIA Novosti reports.

The newspaper notes that the reforms conducted by Gorbachev were able to undermine the position of the Union in both the economic field and in the military sphere, and became failed in the short term.

“If it were not for its specific and, as it turned out, a failed course on the reform of the Soviet Union, the story could go completely different way,” the authors of the publication explained.

The article Svenska Dagbladet emphasizes that Gorbachev was “rightfully awarded the Nobel Prize of the World in 1990. Evaluating the results of the policies of publicity and restructuring, Swedish journalists, concluded that the initiatives “were late and even worsened the initial position of the Soviet Union.”

According to them, the restructuring only predetermined the economic crisis of the country, increasing inflation and food deficiency. And freedom of speech pushed residents of the USSR to the point in which they began to question the political system itself.

The publication recognized that there are other versions regarding what was the determining cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, the “uncompromising arms race” could contribute to such developments, which was held under the leadership of President Ronald Reagan and which led to the economic weakening of the USSR and its allies in Eastern Europe.
