Term of office of UN peacekeepers in Cyprus extended

The UN Security Security extended the term of office of UN peacekeepers deployed on the island of Cyprus, for another six months in accordance with resolution 2618 (2022) of January 27, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.

We note, currently in Cyprus are deployed by the UN military forces (UNFICYP). They were created by the Security Council on March 4, 1964 in order to prevent collisions between the Greek and Turkish communities of Cyprus and to support the maintenance and restoration of the law and order. After the armed clashes of 1974, the Mandate of UNFICYC was expanded – UN peacekeepers began to monitor the compliance with the regime of the buffer zone between the positions of the Cyprus National Guard and Turkish and Cyprus-Turkish forces.
