Turkey: refused to arouse a criminal case due to death of Mamedov activist

Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office completed an investigation into the case of Activist Bayrama Mamedov, drowned in the sea on May 2, 2021. It was decided not to initiate a criminal case on the lack of grounds, reports haqqin.az.

The application has spread the Istanbul branch of the Association of Contemporary Lawyers of Turkey (çHD). It is noted that, given that the death of Bayrama Mamedov was considered “suspicious” his relatives and friends, the Istanbul branch of the Association appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office of Istanbul with a request to investigate this case.

Recall that Bayram Mamedov came out of the house on May 2, 2021 and did not return. Two days later, it turned out that Mamedov fell into the sea in the Kadyki district and drowned, and his body was in the morgue of the Justice institution in Istanbul. The Prosecutor’s Office of Istanbul began investigating the death of Bayrama Mamedov at the request of the Istanbul compartment of çHD. Today, the prosecutor’s office sent an official response to the appeal of the organization, which states that, according to the results of the forensic examination of November 29, 2021, Bayram Mamedov died as a result of drowning. Due to the lack of grounds for initiating a criminal case, the prosecutor’s office decided to terminate the investigation on December 7, 2021 on the basis of the conclusion of forensic medical examination.
