Turkmenistan will convene on June 23 an international scientific conference to solve the problem of the Darvaz gas crater, known as the Gates of Hell, the Turkmen news agency Orient.

a conference called “Reducing emissions into the environment in the conditions of hydrocarbons and prospects for the Darwaz gas crater” will be held in Ashgabat. Leading energy experts will discuss innovative technologies in hydrocarbons and reducing associated gas.

According to the agency, representatives of international organizations and financial institutions will take part in meetings and discussions: the UN, OSCE, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, as well as diplomatic mission accredited in Turkmenistan.

The gas crater in the Karakum desert, 266 km from Ashgabat, appeared in 1971 as a result of the collapse of the exploration mine at this place. Subsequently, representing a basin with a diameter of 60 and a depth of 20 meters, the crater was nicknamed the “gates of hell.” Flame pillars emanating from curtains under the crater and appearing as a result of combustion of suitable gas can reach 15 meters in height.
