UK sells 56-bedroom nuclear bunker

In the British county of Devon, an underground bunker located near the resort town of Sulcombe was put up for sale for 435 thousand pounds ($ 607 thousand), writes The Independent. The building was specially equipped for civil servants.

Hope Cove’s two-story bunker was built in 1941 as a radar station. After World War II, due to the threat of a nuclear attack, it was converted into a reserve government headquarters. Inside the property there are 56 bedrooms that can accommodate up to 250 people.

The fuel reserves in the bunker should have been enough for 35 days of operation of the generators of the power supply and life support system. The facility was in a state of readiness until the 1990s.

Overseer Christopher Howell told Sky News: “The facility was designed to be airtight, recirculated, and if anything radioactive got in, it could provide some protection to the occupants.” Howell said the building was “highly secure,” and people were on site at all times to keep it “operational” in the event of an explosion. The caretaker says that a ghost may wander in the bunker, according to rumors, a wartime pilot who allegedly climbs the stairs at night.
