On the issue of Cyprus, the parties move forward step by step in order to strengthen trust. This was announced by the UN Secretary General Antoniu Gutherrish according to the results of an expanded informal meeting on Cyprus held in New York.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Hakan Fidan, the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRK) Ersin Tatars, leader of the Greco-Kiro Administration Nikos Khristodilidis, Greece Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapertritis, as well as a representative of the UK, Minister of Europe and North America Stephen Dauti.
Guterrish emphasized that since the beginning of his mandate remains committed to the safety and well -being of all Cypriots, and called the negotiations constructive. He said that the participants discussed six initiatives agreed in March, including the creation of a technical committee for youth, environmental protection projects and climate change, restoration of cemeteries and clearance agreements.
According to him, discussions are continuing on the opening of four new checkpoints and the implementation of solar energy in the buffer zone. “It is extremely important that all these initiatives are implemented as soon as possible for the benefit of all Cypriots,” said the UN head.
Answering the question of new transitions, Guterrys noted that the agreement has been reached, but the transitions have not yet been open. He clarified that the issue of the route that has to be discussed in the future remains unresolved.
The UN Secretary General also noted that significant disagreements are preserved between the parties in relation to the ways of solving the Cyprus issue. “We step by step move forward in order to strengthen trust, creating the conditions for specific steps for the good of the Cyprus people. There is complete understanding on this occasion,” he emphasized.
Touching the situation in Syria, Gutherrish recalled the need to respect the territorial integrity of the country and recognize the rights of all local communities. “The solution of the Syrian problem should belong to the Syrians themselves,” he added.
