United States has increased import of nuclear fuel from Russia

In October 2022, the United States imported goods from the Russian Federation to $ 732 million, this is a maximum of the last five months, RBC reports with reference to the US Census Bureau (Census Bureau).

According to information, the US commodity import from the Russian Federation collapsed five times compared to the beginning of the year – in February, states purchased goods worth more than $ 2.6 billion. In October, for the first time in six months, growth was observed: compared to September Importment of September From Russia, it grew 2.2 times from $ 332.1 million to $ 732 million. In May of this year, the States purchased products by $ 1.1 billion. In October, the States mainly imported nuclear fuel, fertilizers and metals of platinum groups from the Russian Federation.

According to the US Energy Information Office, last year the country closed about 14% of the needs of the nuclear power plant in Uranus due to imports from Russia.

Reuters previously wrote that American companies developing small nuclear power plants of the new generation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions are faced with the problem – only one company sells the fuel they need, and it is from Russia. Therefore, the agency noted, the US government seeks to use part of its weapons uranium reserves to help the American nuclear industry and give impetus to the development of the industry. Reuters clarifies: Rosatom did not fall under the sanctions of the United States or the EU, largely due to its importance for the world nuclear industry. However, American developers of small nuclear power plants, such as X-Energy and Terrapower, do not want to depend on the Russian supply chain and therefore plan to abandon the fuel from the Russian Federation after the invasion of Ukraine.
