Vitautas Landsbergis: Gorbachev lies about “bloody January” Baku, Riga and Vilnius

Parliamentarians of Azerbaijan and Latvia, despite the situation with a pandemic, continue the contacts in remote mode. The 32nd anniversary of the “bloody January” in Baku and tragic events in January 1991 were becoming a reason for the new such virtual meeting.

A few days ago, the Embassy of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Latvia in the center of Riga was installed themed photo began, dedicated to January 20.

By giving honor of the memory of those killed in the days of the “bloody January” 1990 and 1991, Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Latvia Elnur Sultanov, laid flowers to the monument of freedom in the capital of Latvia.

The deputies of the legislative power of the two countries participated in the meeting: from Azerbaijan – Kamran Bayramov, Chairman of Friendship with the Seimas (Parliament) of Latvia, deputy, member of the group by Nizami Safarov, from the Latvian side – Roman Nudins, Chairman of the Cooperation Group with the Parliament of Azerbaijan in Sejm Latvia, members of this group Alexander Kirsteins, Armands Krause, as well as Renars Salis, Director of the Barricade Museum in Riga and representatives of the public and Azerbaijani diaspora.

In his opening speech, Azerbaijani Ambassador Elnur Sultanov spoke about the tragic events that occurred on the night of January 19-20, 1990, about the historical press conference in the representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, during which he sharply condemned the bloody instigators January massacre and brought the truth about this tragedy to the world. It was on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev for the first time in 1994, a political and legal assessment of the tragedy was given on January 20 at the state level. He stressed that the January tragedy, becoming a nationwide sorrow, at the same time showed heroism and the disadvantage of the will of the Azerbaijani people on the path to independence.

The deputies of the highest authorities of the two countries highlighted the terrible events in Baku as a result of entering units of the Soviet Army and the bloody suppression of the Military Protests of Azerbaijanis, direct responsibility in this crime of the then leader of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev and Soviet generals. Parliamentarians held a straight parallel between January 1990 in Baku and January 1991 in Riga and Vilnius.
