Armenian authorities are discussing several candidates for post of Chief of General Staff

The Armenian authorities have not yet been able to dismiss the head of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan, but they are already considering the candidacies of several military men to replace him. The newspaper “Past” informs about it.

As the newspaper notes, the first candidate was Major General and Deputy Head of the General Staff Andranik Makaryan, however, using compromising evidence and pressure from the authorities, they only achieved that he did not join the statement demanding the resignation of the prime minister. Makaryan does not agree to replace Gasparyan. Moreover, he made it clear that he would leave the service after the situation was resolved.

The second candidate for power is the former commander of the occupation forces of Armenia in Karabakh, Lieutenant General Jalal Harutyunyan. However, he has not yet made up his mind, moreover, his state of health does not allow him to fully engage in army affairs. The name of the former head of the General Staff Artak Davtyan is also being discussed, but the authorities have doubts about him.

“The authorities are actively discussing the candidacy of Lieutenant General Mikael Arzumanyan. The authorities have not yet fully decided, but consider his appointment one of the most likely, since he was not a participant in the latest events in Armenia and is neutral,” the newspaper writes, citing its sources .
