Armenian President hopes for “civilized” relations with Turkey

President of Armenia Vaagn Khachaturian sees positive trends in terms of normalizing relations between Yerevan and Ankara.

According to Khachaturian, whose words are cited by the Armenian media, “the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey hold meetings … I see positive trends and I hope that we can establish civilized, normal and predictable good -neighborly relations.”

The President of Armenia noted that Yerevan always advocated the establishment of relations with Ankara and the opening of borders without preconditions. Khachaturian believes that the best tool for solving complex problems is democracy and development. From this point of view, Armenia considers the normalization of relations with neighbors as an opportunity to solve complex problems.

In December 2021, Armenia and Turkey appointed their special representatives to negotiate to normalize bilateral relations. On the Armenian side, he became the vice speaker of the parliament Ruben Rubinyan, Ankara is represented by the former ambassador to the United States Serdar Kylych. The diplomats already held four rounds of negotiations, the first meeting took place in Moscow, the remaining three in Vienna. In addition, in July 2022, the first telephone conversation of the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Turkey was held, and in October their first meeting was held in Prague.
