Azerbaijani elected to UN Committee on Human Rights

On Friday, June 17, as part of the 39th meeting of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in New York, elections to the UN Committee on Human Rights on 2023-2026 were held, reports the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is noted that candidates from 17 countries, including Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Azerbaijan Republic, Farid Akhmedov, claimed 9 vacancies in the committee.

In the vote, in which 173 countries took part, a candidate from Azerbaijan was elected a member of the committee with 94 votes.

Note that the UN Human Rights Committee, which was created in 1993, monitors the implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and is one of the basic international mechanisms for protecting human rights at the global level.

Azerbaijani representative was first elected to the committee consisting of 18 members. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses gratitude to all countries who supported the election of a representative of Azerbaijan to this prestigious organization.
