Azerbaijani Ombudsman discusses torture of Azerbaijani prisoners with US Ambassador

Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva received US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan Lee Litzenberger.

The main directions of joint cooperation in the field of human rights protection were discussed at the meeting.

During the meeting, the Ombudsman spoke about the investigation missions carried out by Azerbaijan in the settlements that were subjected to rocket fire by the Armenian Armed Forces during the Patriotic War.

The Ombudsman noted that on the basis of the facts and evidence obtained during these missions, 7 reports on torture and ill-treatment of Azerbaijani prisoners and hostages were prepared and sent to the relevant international organizations, embassies, including the US Embassy. sides of Armenia.

S.Aliyeva noted that she met with Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians taken prisoner and hostage by Armenia, and was interested in their problems. At the same time, S. Aliyeva noted that she had visited the captured Armenian servicemen, drew attention to ensuring their rights, presented them with the European Convention on Human Rights, published in Armenian.

The Ombudsman noted that with the liberation from the occupation of the Azerbaijani territories, which Armenia had held under occupation for about 30 years, the violated rights of internally displaced persons were finally restored. At the same time, the Ombudsman drew attention to the fact of the massive placement of mines on the territory of Azerbaijan during the occupation by Armenia. She expressed serious concern over the fact that Armenia did not provide Azerbaijan with a map of mined areas.

During the meeting, the prospects for joint cooperation in the field of legal education were discussed.
