Baku: militant Isismist is judged

The trial in the criminal case of a member of the Azeri Jamaat group Akif Osmanov, accused of participating in hostilities in Syria, began.

According to haqqın.az, the case is conducted by Judge Javid Huseynov. According to the indictment, in 2013, Akif Osmanov, together with Elshad Dzhafarov and Javid Agjabekov, flew from Ganja to Turkey, and from there to Syria. In this country, “brothers in arms” participated in the hostilities as part of the aforementioned group. During the battles of Osmanov, he was wounded.

Akif Osmanov did not admit the guilt of the charges. He stated that he did not take part in battles, and used weapons only on exercises conducted by militants. The defendant, he said, was wounded when he “helped the besieged”: “I returned to Turkey in January 2014, I lived in Istanbul for two years. We, five people, were arrested as members of the ISIS terrorist group on a complaint of neighbors. In 2017, he passed The court, we appealed for the decision and were justified in October 2021. And on April 2022 I was deported from Turkey and detained at the airport, ”Osmanov said in a statement.

The defendant said that he was very sorry about the decision to go to Syria: in Azerbaijan he was a wealthy person. Osmanov added that he had not seen his wife and children for many years.

The court will continue on February 7th.

Note that as a result of the investigation of the criminal case it turned out that Osmanov was military training in the camp of the Islamist militants in the Syrian city of Atma. Then he participated in the battles as part of the Azeri Jamaat group. Investigators also found that Osmanov enjoyed a fake Uzbek passport to avoid pursuit of law enforcement officers. Akif Osmanov was detained during the special operation of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan in May 2022 and brought to criminal liability. The court put him under arrest.
