In the capital of Germany Berlin in 2024, the number of attacks and cases of discrimination against Muslims increased by about 70 % compared to the previous year.
According to the report of the Alliance against Islamophobia and hostility to Muslims (Claim), in Berlin, 644 incidents directed against Muslims, including acts of violence and discrimination, were recorded in Berlin for 2024. The document emphasizes that this means growth by almost 70 % compared to 2023.
At a press conference in Berlin, the co-chair of the Alliance Rome Hanano said that the new annual report is painting an alarming picture for the city. She called on the authorities to take more decisive measures against the growing anti -Muslim racism.
“Such growth means that in Berlin two incidents directed against Muslims occur almost daily,” Hanano noted.
According to her, in most cases women became victims: in incidents where the floor of the victims was known, women were about two -thirds (64%). In addition, in some cases, the victims were with their children.
The report says that the largest number of incidents is associated with discrimination in schools, at workplaces and in the field of housing. Following the number of cases are verbal attacks.
Hanano emphasized that the recorded cases reflect only part of the incidents, and the real number of attacks can be much higher.
She also drew attention to the noticeable growth of anti -Muslim racism after the aggravation of the conflict in the Middle East on October 7, 2023, adding that such bursts were observed after terrorist attacks in Germany. According to her, the statements of politicians and the manner of covering events in the media often represent Muslims as a threat to security, thereby strengthening the atmosphere of distrust and discrimination.
“Muslims often a priori suspect and represent as a problem for public security. Some people feel justified in their actions under the influence of such statements and rhetoric,” Hanano said.
According to her, it is especially alarming that even children and adolescents are subjected to verbal and physical attacks on the streets.
, according to estimates, in Germany, whose population is about 84 million people live about 5.5 million Muslims. After France, Germany ranks second in Western Europe in terms of the Muslim population.
