Canadian Scientists Are Recommended To Avoid “unnecessary” Trips To United States

Canadian Association of University Teachers (Caut) called on scientists to avoid “unnecessary” trips to the USA.

“Scientists should carefully evaluate what information they have or should have on their electronic devices when crossing the border, and if necessary, take measures to protect confidential information,” the statement published on the Caut website.

In the statement, it is recommended to make a scientist to make trips to the United States only in case of emergency due to a “rapidly changing political situation” in the country and the difficulties that arise when crossing the border.

It is noted that some scientists should “pay special attention” to this warning. An example is those who “express a negative opinion about the policy of the current US administration” and whose “research can be regarded as the contradictory positions of the US administration.”

According to information on the CAUT website, the association presents more than 72 thousand scientists, librarians and researchers.

The messages of the local media provide data from the US Customs and Border Service, indicating a decrease in the number of entering the country from Canada in March 2025 by about 32% compared to the same period last year.
