Constitution Day celebrates in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan today celebrates one of the most important public holidays – the Constitution Day.

August 30, 1995, at a universal referendum, the Basic Law of Kazakhstan was adopted.

The first constitution of an independent country was adopted in 1993, but two years later it was adopted in the modern edition. The adoption of the Basic Law was preceded by a long preparatory stage. To adopt the current version of the Constitution, the experience of many foreign countries was studied, the principles of the formation of documents in the state were based on: in particular, the principle of separation of branches of power, the principle of democracy.

On June 5, 2022, a republican referendum was held to amend the Constitution, which became one of the important and historical events for the country.

For constitutional amendments, 77.18 percent of Kazakhstanis, or 6,163,516 people who took part in a referendum in all regions of the country, then voted.

More than 70 mass, sports and cultural events are planned for the Constitution Day in Astana.

The head of state Kasim-Zhomart Tokaev congratulated Kazakhstanis on the Constitution Day.

“The Basic Law is a strong support of our statehood, determining the social and political structure, enduring values ​​and strategic vector of the country’s development,” the congratulation says.

Tokaev noted that the constitution updated as a result of a national referendum has become a bright symbol of the consolation of the nation. “It acts as a reliable foundation of the ongoing large -scale transformations aimed at democratizing the political system, ensuring the supremacy of law, a progressive increase in the well -being of the people. One of such institutional reforms was the creation of the Constitutional Court, which significantly strengthened the role of the Basic Law as a guarantor of protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens,” – He said.
