The President of Benin, Patrice Talon, officially announced the failure of the coup attempt in the country.
In a live address on state television, the head of state said that today Benin experienced an extremely serious event, a group of military personnel attempted an armed rebellion.
The President said that the attempted uprising was completely suppressed. All persons behind the organization and implementation of this act will be identified and will receive the most severe punishment in accordance with the law, Patrice Talon assured.
The head of state noted that the situation in the country is under the full control of the armed forces and security forces, and called on citizens to remain calm and continue their daily activities.
The previous morning, a group of military personnel calling themselves the “Military Reconstruction Committee” issued a statement about the seizure of power in the country.
Shortly thereafter, the Minister of the Interior Benin Del. Alassane Seydoux confirmed on his social media accounts that the coup attempt had completely failed.
