Court in Moscow fined Telegram for refusing to remove personal data of an individual

The peace of the city of Moscow on August 24 assigned a fine of 50 thousand rubles to the Telegram messenger for refusing to delete personal data of an individual, Russian media reports.

The administrative protocol was drawn up after consideration of a complaint of a citizen of the Russian Federation who demanded to delete her personal data from the Antihost Telegram channel.

According to the Law on Personal Data, which was adopted in 2015, organizations are required to store data from citizens of the Russian Federation in digital bases that are located in Russia. In the event of a violation, the service can be blocked, and the organization may be fined a violation.

Messenger found guilty under Part 5 of Art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (“The operator does not fulfill the requirements for the clarification of personal data, if they are inaccurate or illegally obtained”).
