A US citizen Meriem Almaz continues the struggle for justice after the death of his father, psychologist Majid Almaz, detained and killed by the forces of the regime Bashar al -Assad.
In 2017, Majid Almaz arrived in Damascus from the United States to provide psychological assistance to the victims of the Civil War. However, he was soon detained on one of the checkpoints by Syrian security forces. For a long time, his fate remained unknown. Later it became known that he died in prison.
“He may not even have a grave. But there are thousands like him. Now I know that not one,” said Almaz, who first returned to Syria after 17 years. According to her, despite the loss, she felt inner calm, meeting with the families of other victims. “My pain has turned into collective solidarity,” she stressed.
Diamond also visited mass burial places. “I experienced an inexpressible pain. Perhaps my father is one of those who rest here. But he is not alone. Thousands went through the same thing,” she said.
She stated that she took responsibility to convey the voice of American families to the Syrian authorities. “I will continue to seek justice through international judicial mechanisms. I want justice to triumph not only for one person, but for everyone. Let my father have no grave, but his value is my main source of power,” said Diamond.
She joined the civil initiative of Bring Oour Families Home (“I will return our loved ones home”) to represent the interests of other families who find themselves in a similar situation and become the voice of all missing.
