Death Toll From Migrant Boat Sinking Off Malaysia Rises To 13

The death toll from a boat carrying migrants that sank off the coast of Malaysia has risen to 13. The search for dozens of missing people continues.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said search and rescue efforts were continuing following the sinking of a ship carrying Rohingya Muslims.

The migrants traveling from Myanmar to Malaysia initially boarded a large vessel carrying about 300 people, it said. They were later transferred to three small boats.

One of the boats, believed to be carrying about 70 people, sank. To date, rescuers have found the bodies of 13 victims. According to the latest data, 13 more people were rescued, but authorities warn that the number of victims may increase.

The fate of approximately 230 people who were on other boats is still unknown.

In Southeast Asian countries, migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh who make sea crossings often become victims of tragic incidents.
