Drought threatens agrarian sector and livestock in Tunisia

In Tunisia, where in recent years a sharp decrease in precipitation has been fixed, the arid climate began to threaten the agricultural and livestock sectors of the country.

The rainy season in the African country begins traditionally in September, but this year a minimum amount of precipitation has fallen. The current situation led to the fact that the level of filling of the reservoirs dropped to a mark below 30 percent.

Tunisia’s authorities called the population to the more careful use of water resources, and the corresponding calls began to sound more and more often.

Against the backdrop of the current situation with water, since April in Tunisia, the quota system for watering in the agrarian sector and the supply of drinking water began to operate in Tunisia.

So the public water distribution company announced that the supply of drinking water to the houses will be carried out at certain hours, the ban on washing vehicles will also be introduced until September 30, 2023.

The drought, which mainly affected the country’s farmers, hit grain production.

In an interview with Anadol, a resident of the central part of Tunisia Farmer Jalal al-Ubeydi spoke about the difficulties that farmers faced, calling a “catastrophe” the current situation.

According to him, the drought that farms experience this year will greatly affect the production of wheat.

The farmer noted that grain manufacturers are fighting with a drought since the beginning of the agrarian season. “This year we could not ensure the normal production of products because we could not find enough water. There will also be difficulties with the purchase of farm products, because watering is carried out only by imported water. The drought this year reached almost 100 percent compared to the previous year This is why farmers who are waiting for rainwater will not receive crops this year, it will be difficult for them to survive, even if it will be rains next year, ”the farmer said.

According to him, each hectare costs a farmer planting wheat, about a thousand dinars ($ 310). “If the farmer cannot get the crop, then it will not be able to cover their expenses. There are support funds that farmers can use in case of natural disasters and droughts, but it is very important to access such structures in time. They will also encounter difficulties and livestock workers because it It is difficult to find food for livestock, ”said the farmer.

In turn, the President of the Farm Farm of Mecaz El-Bab Emens Shevashi believes that the current year will be very difficult for Tunisian farmers. “A natural disaster fell on us. We are experiencing a very bad season this year. I think that this year there will be no crop for gathering,” Shevashi is sure.
