Dushanbe does not consider issue of possible accession of country to EAEU – Foreign Ministry

At present, the authorities of Tajikistan are not considering the issue of the possible accession of the country to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). This was reported by Kommersant with reference to the head of the Department of Information and Press of the Foreign Ministry of Tajikistan Shokhina Samadi.

Samadi commented on the words of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov, who expressed the hope that Tajikistan will “determine the benefits from joining the EAEU in the near future”.

The issue of Tajikistan’s accession to the EAEU, which includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, has been discussed since 2015.

During a visit to Dushanbe on June 6, Sergei Lavrov expressed the hope that the Tajik authorities will still “soon determine the benefits of joining the Eurasian Economic Union.”

In another speech, the minister cited statistics: according to the Eurasian Development Bank, last year there were 44 percent of the volume of foreign trade of Tajikistan.
