EU makes efforts to continue import of Ukrainian grain

The European Union has prepared a plan that includes additional support to farmers and the introduction of certain restrictions on the import of a number of names of agricultural products from Ukraine. This is stated in a statement by the Vice President of the European Commission of Valdis Dombrovskis and the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Yanush Voitskhovsky following a meeting with representatives of Ukraine and five EU members limiting the export of Ukrainian products.

the EU proposed a package of financial assistance to five countries of Ukraine in exchange for the abolition of restrictive measures for Ukrainian agricultural goods.

The package includes financial support to farms that suffer losses due to purchases of Ukrainian grain, as well as exclusive measures to protect the local market, the document says.

The statement emphasizes the importance of following the general approach of the EU instead of unilateral decisions, which jeopardize the functioning of the domestic market of the European Union. “The country’s package proposed by the commission will be received only if unilateral restrictive measures will be canceled,” the European Commission explained.

The package involves financial assistance in the amount of 100 million euros to farmers in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia.
