EU set conditions for Georgia to obtain status of a candidate

On the Council of the Association of the European Union-Georgia, the European side announced the conditions, under which Georgia will receive the status of a candidate for joining the organization, writes Deutsche Welle.

Among the conditions, the reform of the judicial system, the give more freedom of the media were named. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, emphasized that Georgia should adhere to the rule of law. In his opinion, a national consensus on joining the European Union should be achieved in the country, and in the process of integration into the EU, it is necessary to use the entire political spectrum of Georgia. Responsibility for fulfilling the requirements will be carried by the ruling party “Georgian Dream”.

In addition to joining the European Union, the councils of Brussels and Tbilisi were discussed at the Council, the war of Russia against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the separatist regions of Georgia. Josep Borrel assured the Georgian side in support of the country’s territorial value and promised to help with strengthening the cybersecurity of the state.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili assured that his government will fulfill all the criteria of the European Union because it is ready to work with all political parties and civil society.
