European Union is preparing an “offensive” in Latin America

The European Union is preparing for a diplomatic and commercial offensive in Latin America to try to confront influence in the region of China and Russia. This was reported on Thursday by the Spanish newspaper El País.

According to the publication, Brussels is alarmed by the advance of the Russian Federation and the PRC in the states of Latin America. According to El País, the EU neglected his relationship with the region for almost a decade, focusing on other problems. China increased its investment in Latin America by 26 times from 2000 to 2020. The European document sent by the EU Foreign Ministry said that the PRC is “the first or second most important trading partners of the Latin America and the Caribbean, displacing the EU and surrounding the United States in many countries.”

The newspaper also notes the political influence of Russia in the region. Brussels will try to stop the growing distance with Latin America thanks to a “quality jump” in relations.

The head of the Euro -dysprepy Josep Borrel initially tried to restore the presence and influence in Latin America, but the Pandemia of Coronavirus prevented the establishment of closer ties. Also, the situation around Ukraine showed that many Latin American states do not divide the European reaction to conflict, the publication notes.

The EU report says that the region has a real “risk of social protest and political destabilization.” The publication writes that Brussels already feels competition from Beijing and Moscow in search of supporting the region in multilateral forums.
