Security sources said Afghan forces targeted Pakistani bases near the Durand Line, considered the border between the two countries, and the attacks were in retaliation for Pakistani air operations.
Some of these bases were overrun and 12 were killed in the clashes Pakistani soldiers.
Residents in the region said clashes in the state’s Dand-e-Patan district had forced civilians to flee their homes.
According to the Islamabad-based Dawn newspaper, Pakistani security forces said the Pakistani army responded “immediately and decisively” to the attacks, leaving many bases and militant positions on the Afghan side were seriously damaged.
Authorities noted that the Pakistani army responded with artillery, tanks, light and heavy weapons, and also used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
