French Street Artist “treats Cities Wounds” Using Mosaics

The famous French anonymous street artist Ememem, famous for his “healing crack” with technology, admitted that it was inspired by Ankara.

“For me, these cracks are like wounds, the healing of which requires care and attention,” he said.

The L’Art de Panser Les Rues (“The Art of Having Streets” has received a recognition for his project, Ememem told Anadol about how he came to the mosaic, how he designed his work and why he considers the sidewalks a vulnerable part of the urban fabric.

The artist who has been working with mosaics for more than 20 years notes that he began to “treat streets” in 2016.

“At first I was engaged in home repairs, and then I thought about how to use the mosaic differently. So I started making Flacking – mosaic patches on the sidewalks,” he said.

He called his work “bandages” and emphasized that every crack is like a wound on the body of the city. “I want to take care of these wounds,” he added.

For us, this is the only form of expression

According to Ememem, he prefers to use the elements of Roman mosaic, and sometimes makes large -scale projects. Even a small insert can reinforce the imagination of passers -by.

“People look at the mosaic and begin to fantasize. This is a way to be attentive to each other and to the environment. For us it is like a poetic statement, our only form of expression,” the artist said.

Ememem mosaics can be found in Ireland, Norway, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, USA. At the end of the year, he plans to go to China.

“My dream is to create a mosaic in one of the craters on the moon, but I still do not know how to realize it,” he shared.

Speaking about the project in Ankara, the artist noted that the city is large and alive.

“Here, as in other megacities, there are cracks, and it inspires me. Ankara is very beautiful. I got a lot of positive reviews here,” he summed up.
