From Agdam to Khankendi: Prospects for communication lines

The Agdam-Khandi railway was built in 1979.

Thanks to the opening of the Baku-Yulakhandi railway, the socio-economic, cultural development of Karabakh accelerated, his connections with Baku were strengthened.

In addition to improving the material and technical supply of the population, this also made it possible to significantly increase the economic indicators of the region. So, due to a decrease in the costs of the supply of raw materials and the transportation of products, the cost of products produced in Karabakh has significantly decreased.

In the 80s of the last century, the annual turnover of cargo transportation on the section of the bard-agdam rail of the Evlakh-Khandi line amounted to 1.5 million tons, and 1 million tons on the section of the Agdam-Khankendi railway line. At that time, the speed of the train was 60 km/h on the bard-agdam railway line, 40 km/h on the railway line of Agdam-Khankendi.

As a result of the occupation of Armenia, 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan in the early 1990s, the railway economy of the republic, like other sectors of the economy, was caused significant damage. Together with the technique, an important part of the railways of Azerbaijan was occupied, the activities of the Evlakh-Khandi railway were stopped, the agdam, Asker and Hankendi stations of this line were captured, the railway tracks were brutally destroyed by Armenians.

Thirty years later, life is being revived on the liberated lands of Azerbaijan – the construction of new railway lines in these regions is being implemented.

by order of the President of Azerbaijan of November 24, 2020, the design and construction of the Bard-Agdam railway line began. Currently, 90 percent of design work has been performed, and the physical progress in the construction and installation work of the line is 70 percent. Long -scale rails with a length of 56.951 km were laid, and the first stage of earthwork, the construction of engineering structures, and laying elements of the upper structure of the track and switch translations were completely completed. By the end of this year, it is planned to complete work on the design and construction of the bard-agdam railway line.
