Georgia: 33rd anniversary of referendum on restoration of independence is celebrated

took part in the referendum.

About 99 percent of the referendum participants spoke in favor of restoring sovereignty on the basis of the act of proclaiming independence of May 26, 1918.

The Georgian SSR became the fourth allied republic after the republics of the Baltic, which organized such a referendum. On April 9, 1991, the Supreme Council adopted an act on restoring the independence of Georgia.

A few months after the referendum, an acute struggle began between the opposition and the authorities, which led to the Civil War. The conflict broke out in South Ossetia, the situation in Abkhazia worsened, and Zviad Gamsakhurdiy, who was elected by President, who would be 85 years old today, was expelled, and in 1993 died under unclear circumstances.
