Georgia asks European Union to abandon term “South Ossetia”

Head of the Committee of the Georgian Parliament on external relations Nikoloz Samharadze will contact the EU asking not to use the term “South Ossetia”. He stated this at a meeting of the Committee, which was attended by the constant Rapporteur of the European Parliament on Georgia, Sven Mixer.

“The Constitution of Georgia is not familiar with such an education as South Ossetia. Maybe we can somehow remove this term out of your official documents? Especially since it is a Stalinist term, and unpleasant when the European Union or some other Affiliate Country uses this name of Stalin’s times. If the European Parliament will require the official appeal of the Georgian authorities to this account, then the Georgian side is ready to do this, “TASS quotes Samcharadze.

In the Constitution of Georgia, South Ossetia is mentioned once – and only as the former South Ossetian autonomous region as part of the Georgian SSR. In official documents, the Georgian side for the designation of this region uses the Tskhinvali region or the historical term Samachablo.
