Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili made a speech to guests invited at an event dedicated to the country’s Independence Day.

According to the head of state, on May 26 it is a “symbol of the unity of the Georgian people, love of freedom, unbending and continuous struggle.”

“We must understand how much independence is the road, which requires constant protection and careful attitude. Caring for the Motherland is not a one -time action or duty, but a continuous process, a kind of mission – the destiny of the Georgian people, which began with the struggle of our ancestors ago and which will not end until Georgia and the Georgian people exist,” said Kavelashvili.

May 26, 1918, the Georgian government, which headed Noah Zordia, proclaimed the independence of the state from the Russian Empire.

The Georgian Democratic Republic existed until February 1921. During this time, 23 states of Europe (Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, RSFSR, Turkey), Asia and Latin America (Argentina and others) recognized Georgia as the state of de jure.

In February 2021, the Georgian SSR was formed, which on December 30, 1922 entered the Union of SSR, first as part of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic (ZSFSR), and from 1936 to 1991 as a union republic.
