Georgian and opposition authorities refused to sign plan proposed by European Council

In Georgia, the leaders of the ruling party “Georgian Dream” and five opposition parties did not sign a document on the settlement of the political crisis in the country, prepared by the Personal Representative of the President of the European Council Christian Danielson. It became known about the night on Wednesday on Wednesday, March 31, reports Deutsche Vella on this topic.

According to Danielson, who for March 2021 visited Georgia twice with a mediating mission, “during the negotiations, the parties did not demonstrate preparedness for compromise.”

Submitted to the signing, the document suggested, among other things, the exemption on bail from the preliminary conclusion of the opposition leader, the Chairman of the Party “Unified National Movement” (UNE) Nicarra Melia. The amount required for this was supposed to make one of the European funds. At the same time, the owner of the opposition television channel “Parrily TV” Georgy Rurua, on the release of which also insists the opposition, according to the plan of the European Council, should have been conditionally exempted from imprisonment in November 2021.

According to Interfax, the document also suggested that the opposition representatives will lead five parliamentary committees, the process of appointing judges and a judicial reform was held, and the appointments of the Prosecutor General and the Chairman of the Central Election Commission will be possible only with the support of two thirds of the list of parliamentary deputies.

The political crisis in Georgia began after the parliamentary elections held in October 2020. According to the results of the voting, 150 opposition deputies took place to parliament. However, 51 of them refused to take their mandate, declared falsification of elections in favor of the ruling party “Georgian Dream” and demanded new elections. At the same time, the opposition could not submit the facts of falsification, and international organizations observed by the elections appreciated them as “competitive” and conducted in compliance with all fundamental rights of citizens.

In early March, the Chairman of the European Council Charles Michel made a mediator between the representatives of the authorities and the opposition in Tbilisi. After talking on March 1 with the President of the Republic of Salome Zurabishvili, the Prime Minister Iraklie Garibashvili and the leaders of opposition parties, Michel invited the parties in the evening of the same day to take part in a meeting in the residence of the head of state to establish a dialogue. According to the head of the Georgian government, this meeting ended the agreement to follow the path of compromises to resolve the political crisis in the country, but this goal was not achieved so far.
