German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Turkey on October 29 and will meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 30.
As Deputy Spokesperson for the German Government Sebastian Hille said, the talks will discuss bilateral relations, foreign policy, as well as cooperation in the field of economics, migration and security.
Hille emphasized that Türkiye is an important NATO member country and plays a key role in issues of energy, trade and migration. According to him, the numerous ties between citizens of Turkish origin in Germany and Turks living in the country make relations between the two states particularly close.
“From this point of view, Turkey is of particular importance and is an important neighbor of the European Union. We are committed to further progress in relations between the EU and Turkey and, as you know, are currently conducting high-level dialogues on issues of trade, migration and security,” – Hille said.
When asked about Turkey’s possible role in the process of deporting Syrians from Germany, Hille noted that this issue is also on the agenda of bilateral relations and will be discussed at a meeting in Ankara.
A joint press conference is planned after the negotiations.
