In Guinea-Bissau, where the military seized power on November 26, a new head of government has been appointed. He became Ilidio Vieira Te, who will also serve as Minister of Finance. This is stated in a statement published by the office of the president.
According to a published decree, General Horta N’ta, who took the oath of office as president of the “transition period”, confirmed Vieira Te as prime minister and minister of finance.
In Guinea-Bissau, with a population of about 2.1 million people, a group of military personnel calling themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order” announced a coup on November 26 on state television. The military accused a number of politicians and a well-known drug lord of trying to destabilize the country, thus justifying their actions.
The very next day, General N’Ta took the oath as the head of the “transition period.”
Political tension in the country worsened after the elections held on November 23. Incumbent President Oumarou Sissoku Embalo, who was running for a second term, declared victory with 65% of the votes even before the official results were published. His main rival, independent candidate Fernando Diaz da Costa, also claimed victory.
Almost immediately after these announcements, the military announced a seizure of power.
Embalo, who had been in the General Staff building for some time, was flown to Senegal last night on a plane sent by the government of that country.
