Hakan Fidan: EU must think strategically and put an end to policy of identity in his approach to Turkey

Foreign Minister of Hakan Turkey Hakan Fidan spoke at a joint press conference organized after his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary Peter Siyyarto.

Fidan recalled that in July Hungary will preside in the European Union (EU) on a rotational basis: “The EU should think strategically and end the identity policy in its approach to Turkey. At the same time, relations between Turkey and the European Union (EU ) should not be sacrificed to the political calculations of some countries, ”he said.

Having reported that his colleague Siyyarto and Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban will take part at the Antalya Diplomatic Forum on March 1-3, Fidan added that Hungary was one of the first countries that he visited at the post of Minister.

Fidan noted that last year President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Hungary twice. According to him, as part of the Erdogan visit, in December, the sixth meeting of the Council of Strategic Cooperation of the High Procedure was held, the level of cooperation of the two countries was increased to the level of expanded strategic partnership. 17 separate agreements have been signed between the countries that strengthen, diversify and renew cooperation in various areas.

– We hope for a further valuable contribution and support of Hungary

The Foreign Minister of Turkey noted that the mechanism of the joint economic and trade committee began activities that will make a significant contribution to achieving the goal of trade between the two countries of $ 6 billion.

According to him, the two countries who are allies in NATO are developing close cooperation in the field of defense industry, implementing specific projects, Fidan recalled that since July Hungary will preside the EU.

Hakan Fidan shared the hope that Hungary during his chairmanship in the EU would achieve progress on issues such as renewal of the Customs Union and liberalization of the visa regime.

The minister also said that they discussed events in the region, and expressed the desire for the war in Ukraine to end as soon as possible by establishing a fair world on the basis of international law. “Turkey, and Hungary believe that peaceful negotiations should be a chance,” said Hakan Fidan.
