Cigeps was created in 1978 to promote the role and significance of sports and its significance for state policy. The committee consists of experts in the field of physical education and sports of 18 UNESCO member states, each of which is elected for a four-year term. There are also permanent advisory members. These include organizations such as the International Olympic Committee, the Council of Europe, the Commonwealth of Nations and others. There are appointed advisory members, including FIFA and a number of other international sports federations. Members with advisory status provide technical support and advise the committee.
